Net Big Stakes Poker- Who is Gus Hansen?
by Carmelo on July 13th, 2010
Gus Hansen had an amazing year on the WPT where he was the only gambler to make it to the last table in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might remember one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. He secured a huge pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Gus has made many televised poker appearances and is considered to be one of the best enthusiasts in the world. While participating in net poker, a different side of Hansen has been seen. He regularly participates in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of $40, 000. Hansen more often than not buys-in for the min of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very weak. He waits for a decent hand and then pushes all in. I believe Hansen is an outstanding poker player but certainly not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is penniless, he has little or no reason to sit at the table with the min buy in.
Buying in for the minimum takes most of the skill out of deep stack poker. Hansen is accepted to be 1 of the best players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy in for the full amount. I believe tv can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The best players in the world could be guys you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be found betting on web poker on Full Tilt. He generally plays in high stakes omaha hold’em and texas hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a competition player. Can he use his abilities in cash games?
