Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical approach in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
