Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he liked playing numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played many hours and lost most times. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus even more on the game.

The actual advancement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
