Stu is regarded by most to the greatest No Limit Hold em Poker gambler ever.
The 3 time World Poker Champion was born in New York in 1953 and began playing poker prior to reaching his teens.
The young bettor started out betting gin and at the age of 10 had won his initial gin tournament, while on holiday with his mother and father. By the age of 14 the little poker maestro had turned professional and stopped going to school.
In ‘54 Stu Ungar entered the history books by winning ten thousand dollars in a gin tournament without sacrificing a single hand, a record which still remains in New York today.
The quick talking wiz kid has been compared, in poker terms, to athletic superstars like Joe Namath and Tiger Woods. Stu had a genuine skill for betting poker but in spite of his achievements in Hold’em poker, he preferred playing gin.
Stu once said that there may several day be a better NL Texas holdem gambler than him except he couldn’t see how anyone could ever be a improved gin gambler.
In 1980 Stu Ungar was put on the world map as one of the finest Hold’em Poker players in the planet when he was crowned World Poker Champion for the first time. Amazingly it was the first time he had entered the tournament.
The following year he dismissed any suggestions that it had been luck, by effectively defending his title. And in 1997 Stu set the record by winning his 3rd World poker championship.
But this poker legend also struggled with substance abuse and a year right after winning his 3rd title Stu Ungar past away in his hotel room. According to doctors, he had died from a cardiac event which was triggered by his lifestyle.
Stu had started out with nothing except his ability and natural talent for the game which made this poker wonderful a millionaire several times over.
