Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked taking part in numerous card games when he was young. He theorized he might improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The actual improvement in his skills happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly wager against one another. He had access into a number of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
