Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to play some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win most times. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The actual improvement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently wager against one another. Howard was able to access a number of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his logical thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
