Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an amazing array of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, as well as several battling for the low.
