His papa taught Phil penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to learn anything he could about poker. He routinely would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not permit the detrimental comments from other people destroy his goal of becoming one of the best poker competitors in the world.
He started playing intently after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he destroyed many of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Even though Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a regular basis.
